Some months carry more weight than others. And Muharram 2025 is one of them. It’s the first month of the Islamic calendar, but more importantly, it’s one of the four sacred months Allah chose for us.
But how do we bring the importance of Muharram into our homes, when the world around us moves on like any other day?
The Prophet ﷺ called it Shahrullah al-Muharram, the month of Allah. That alone shows it’s an opportunity for renewal. Not through fireworks or resolutions, but through returning to Allah intentionally. And when we live that out as parents, our children witness it.
Here’s how you can make Muharram 2025 meaningful as a family:
One of the most amazing stories is the story of Prophet Musa (AS).
Imagine that scene for a moment: the sea ahead, Pharaoh’s army behind, and a group of believers trapped in between. It looked hopeless. But Prophet Musa (AS) said with unwavering certainty:
“Indeed, my Lord is with me; He will guide me.” (Surah Ash-Shu’ara, 26:62)
And then the sea split.
This story is a message that Allah’s help is always near, even when we can’t see it. Even when we’re standing on the edge of fear and uncertainty.
It’s a message we want our children to carry in their hearts too. That when they feel stuck, small, or unsure, they are never alone. The same Lord who split the sea for Musa (AS) watches over them too.
That same lesson of standing firm, trusting Allah, and believing that even the smallest voice matters is woven into many of the books we’ve lovingly created at Ruqaya’s Bookshelf. Stories like Spell it Like Samar and Not Too Little to Make a Difference remind young readers about courage, justice, and faith in hardship.
When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah and found the Jews fasting this day in remembrance of Allah saving Prophet Musa (AS) and his people from Pharaoh, he said:
“We are closer to Musa than they are.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
And so, he fasted and encouraged us to fast too, teaching us that honouring the past is part of our faith. In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said about the 10th day of Muharram:
“Fasting the day of Ashura expiates the sins of the previous year.”
(Sahih Muslim)
This is a gift of mercy from Allah. Even if your child can’t fast yet, let them join the suhoor so they can feel the barakah.
Write out things you’re grateful for and what you’re asking from Allah. Let your kids make their own dua list so they raise their small hands in sincere prayer.
Help your family see the blessings and rewards of Muharram 2025.
Bismillah. Let’s begin this year with renewed faith and barakah.
